How do you account for local differences in grid vs ground distances?

Ignore datum differences and apply a single scale.

Use scale factors and transformation formulas to convert between grid and ground distances, applying the appropriate grid-to-ground conversion for the datum.

Distances measured on a grid (the projected plan) aren’t the same as true ground distances because projecting the curved Earth onto a flat grid introduces distortion. The local scale factor of the projection tells you how much grid lengths are stretched or compressed relative to the actual ground lengths at a given location. To get accurate ground distances, you apply that scale factor and use the appropriate grid-to-ground transformation for the datum in use. In practice you take the measured grid distance and convert it to ground distance using the location’s scale factor (ground distance ≈ grid distance divided by the local scale factor; for example, a grid distance of 100 m with a scale factor of 1.0005 yields about 99.95 m). When a datum change is involved, you may also perform a datum transformation (via standard methods) to relate grid coordinates to the correct ellipsoidal framework before or after applying the scale factor. This approach accounts for projection distortion and datum differences, giving distances that reflect true ground lengths.

Use a random guess for distance correction.

Only use ground distances without any conversion.
